The Castle Ehrenhain is in the district Ehrenhain (before 1708 Fuchshayn) of the community Nobitz in Altenburger Land in Thuringia .

history

The partially preserved castle is located east of the district. It was built in the 12th century. In addition, in 1175 the Lord of Hain was named, who probably owned the castle. In 1525 the local castle apparently belonged to the gentlemen von Ende , because the tortured and mutilated sexton Georg Droßdorf, expelled from Ponitz , asked the Saxon elector Johann the Constant for his help to get a job here with the gentlemen von Ende: “Please E. Kfl. G. to give me guidance and protection and to talk to the dinst from the end to the Fuchshayn or to Kybaw [Gieba bei Altenburg] ... ". In 1552 it was rebuilt after a fire.

In 1816 the siblings Dorothea Elisabeth and Friedrich August Mühlig bought the castle, which had previously belonged to the von Schönbergn von Bose and von Pflugk families one after the other. After the death of the childless siblings (Friedrich August in 1832, Dorothea Elisabeth in 1833), the castle was transferred as entails to the related Hofmann family on the condition that the family name of the previous owner be retained before their own. This led to the official double name Mühlig called Hofmann (simplified: Mühlig-Hofmann). In 1893 Heinrich Mühlig-Hofmann carried out a modernization.

The moated castle became one of the largest manors in the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg with many lands, at least that's what a document from 1886 says.

After the Second World War

After the end of the Second World War , before the founding of the GDR in 1949, the fifth generation of the family of the last castle owner was expropriated and expelled from the Soviet Zone with the condition that they were at least 100 km from To move to Ehrenhain, which meant an escape into the American zone of occupation . In 1950 the gatehouse was demolished and after 1970 the tower of the castle was blown up.
