Falkenberg Castle (Klagenfurt am Wörthersee)
Falkenberg Castle is a castle-like building on Falkenberg in the northwest of the Carinthian capital Klagenfurt am Wörthersee . The originally rural courtyard was expanded into a noble residence around 1686. The listed building is now used as an inn and guesthouse.
history
Johann Weichard von Valvasor named a castle Falkenstein in the so-called Falkenwald around 1680. Today there are no more remains of it. The later castle was first mentioned in 1569 and 1580. It was a rural fiefdom in the 16th century . The Faulner family, who owned the nearby Drasing Castle, acquired Falkenberg, but had to leave the country as Protestants in the course of the Counter Reformation . Subsequently, Emperor Ferdinand II enfeoffed1630 Johann Christof Deutenhofer with the Drasing rule. His son acquired numerous other dominions in the area of Klagenfurt, which were divided among his sons. Falkenberg fell to Johann David von Deutenhofen, who sold it on to Georg Sigmund von Hallerstein. In 1686 he had the court expanded into a nobleman’s seat.
After him, the property changed hands frequently. Well-known owners included Claudius von Schneeweiß (1715), Anton von Fromiller (1716), Leopold von Rechbach (1758), Leopold von Grottenegg (1758), Anton Werzer (1798) and Andreas von Buzzi (1835). From 1938 on, the writer Bill Bem owned Falkenberg Castle. Falkenberg Castle has been owned by the Gröblacher family since 1945, who use it as a restaurant and guesthouse.
Building description
Falkenberg Castle is located at the foot of the Falkenberg on a plateau in front of it and is surrounded by meadows and forests. The two-storey building with a rectangular floor plan has oriels placed over corners at the corners. The two eastern ones were built as part of an expansion in 1973, the two western ones arose from corner towers that laterally closed off the five-axis main front. The building, which was originally covered with wooden shingles and is now covered with clay tiles, has a high hipped roof that extends over the four bay windows.
