The Fischbach Castle is in the district Fischbach in the east of Eisenach located half-timbered building. The village of Fischbach, located under the southern slope of the Petersberg , mentioned as Vispach in 1269 , belonged to the property of the Eisenach Nikolaikloster until the Reformation .

history

During the Thuringian-Hessian War of Succession in the middle of the 13th century, a knight from the neighboring village of Stockhausen built the Malittenburg, a wooden spur castle that is still clearly recognizable today and secured by ditches and ramparts, above the village . At the beginning of the ravine leading up to Malittenburg a property was built, probably the front yard of the monastery.

In 1613 the Schellhase brothers sold the farm to Georg Kley, a citizen of Eisenach. During the transfer, Duke Johann Ernst , who resided in Marksuhl , took over the property and gave it to his wife Christine , a daughter of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel , in 1614 . The master builder Hans Weber from Hersfeld - a master of the late Renaissance - was commissioned to remodel and expand the estate in a representative manner. Significant parts of the existing building fabric belong to this time. Weber placed a richly decorated half-timbered floor on the stone ground floor. He added a stair tower and a side wing to the main building in the south. On the courtyard side of the castle, the year "1624" has been cut into several beam heads. The portals of the main entrances were decorated with coats of arms. Behind the castle, hidden from the main house, there were some coach houses and farm buildings.

The heirs of Duchess Christine sold the Fischbach Castle to the Eisenach citizen Heinrich Gebhard before 1684. From this family it passed, again through purchase, to the Duchess Christine Juliane , but came back to the Gebhard family as early as 1704. In 1719 they were again forced to sell and the associated dismantling of the property, the majority of which went into the ownership of the town council.

The castle must have become an inn as early as the 18th century. According to Johann Wilhelm Storch's description, the spacious inn had several visiting rooms, a dance hall, a covered bowling alley and a garden with shady arbors. “The strolling enthusiast will find a humane, friendly host who welcomes his guests with the greatest politeness and then dismisses them. The visitor enjoys a good coffee, just such beer, which is plentiful and served at the cheapest price. On Sundays after the church service, the inn is a playground for the young world from Eisenach, who go there in droves and have fun with dancing. ”Around 1910, owned by an Otto Liebetrau, the building and tavern were rebuilt again, and the high stone protective wall probably also disappeared and the portal.

After 1980, the Eisenach branch of the State Institute for the Preservation of Monuments took over the building, which was in dire need of renovation, and set up its administrative offices, archive, training rooms and workshops here. The entire building complex was completely refurbished, a stored archway was built on Malittenburgweg, indicating the former defensive wall. A small park was created in the courtyard. The building complex was partially made available to the public, exhibitions, concerts and theater performances were held here. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, the property was privatized.
