The so-called Castle in Gliwice is located on the edge of the Old Town on Pod Murami Street and is now part of the Museum in Gliwice .

Before 1945 it was known as the Stockhaus (prison). The building, also known today as the Piast Castle , was actually not a castle and is probably not on the site of the residence of the Dukes of Gleiwitz .

history

The origins of the building go back to the city wall , which was built in the 14th century. A part of this wall (still recognizable today) was included in the building when this and a defensive tower were expanded to become the residence of the city lord Friedrich von Czettritz (Zetritz). The stone and brick Gothic building was erected in the 16th century. The castle later served as an armory , prison and farm. At the end of the 1950s the castle was renovated, rebuilt and given a tower and has been part of the museum in Gliwice since 1959.
