The Kirchberg am Walde Castle stands on a step in the south of the village of Kirchberg am Walde in the market town of Kirchberg am Walde in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The castle was documented in the 12th century in the possession of the Lords of Kirchberg. From 1489 to 1555 owned by the Lords of Hohenfeld. 1556 to 1561 owned by Dietmar von Losenstein. 1561 to 1607 owned by the Lords of Sondernhof. From 1607 to 1707 owned by the von Kollonitsch barons. 1707 to 1752 owned by the Counts of Kuefstein. 1752 to 1828 owned by the Count Veterani-Mallenthein. From 1828 to 1869 French aristocrats lived in the castle with Count Maximilian d`Orsay and the dukes of Blacas d`Angoulême with stays by members of the French royal family with Charles X and the Duke of Bordeaux. Owned by Fischer Ritter von Ankern since 1867.

A castle was mentioned in a document in 1172. The former keep was partly used in the later west wing. A Gothic conversion can be seen in the inner courtyard. The late medieval farm yard was reinforced by a tower preserved in the small castle. With construction work in the 16th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance four-wing complex with corner towers. The western wing of the castle was expanded to the outside in around 1690. In 1733 the new building of the castle church was consecrated. Around 1780/1790 the castle was rebuilt with the extension of the small castle to its present form. In 1945 the castle suffered damage. 1974/1975 was a restoration.

architecture

Around an essentially medieval four-wing building, the palace was expanded in several parts in the baroque and early classicism periods on irregular terrain. The castle is structurally connected to the castle church in the west by a towering cliff. In the east of the square there is a forecourt with the so-called small castle. The farmyard is in the south.
