The old castle in Reichenberg (Liberec)

The Liberec Castle ( German Reichenberg Castle) is a classicist building in the center of Liberec ( German Reichenberg) in the Czech Republic (Northern Bohemia), whose current shape dates from the 18th century. Until 2001, one of the largest glass collections was housed here.

history

Joachim von Bieberstein (Bibrštejn) first built a residential house (mansion) on the site from 1538. In the years 1583–1587 the brothers Christoph von Redern († 1591) and Melchior von Redern (1555–1600) built a renaissance castle. Marcus Antonio de Lancie, who was active in Görlitz at this time, is believed to be the architect .

After the death of Christoph I von Redern, the property passed into the possession of Melchior von Redern, then to his wife Katharina von Redern , née. Countess Schlick (1564–1617), who managed it for her son Christoph II von Redern (1591–1641). In the years 1604–1606, Katharina von Redern had a castle chapel built on the north side of the building by the master builder Johann Arkan from Zittau, while a bell tower was built in the north wing.

In 1609 the north wing was built for her sister Nicola von Nostitz (Mikuláška z Nosticové), called the Nostitz wing. The older Redern wing of the castle was destroyed in a fire in 1615, but the castle chapel was spared. The reconstruction in the late Renaissance style was also carried out by Johann Arkan from Zittau.

After the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620, Christoph von Redern was expropriated and the rule went to Albrecht von Wallenstein . After the murder of Wallenstein, the Counts of Clam-Gallas received the castle. Christian Phillip Graf Clam-Gallas (1748–1805) had a new building built next to the old castle. This so-called New Palace - a two-storey neoclassical building - was built by architect Louis Grenier († 1811) and master builder Johann Josef Kunze (Kuntze) in the years 1773–1776. From 1785 to 1786 the Redern wing of the old castle was redesigned in baroque style and provided with a mansard roof, only the north wing with the castle chapel remained in its old form. In addition, the surrounding walls were removed from the palace gardens.

A conversion of the new castle in the spirit of Romanticism to the summer residence of the family of Count Clam-Gallas took place in the years 1852-1854 by the Viennese architect Friedrich August von Stache (1814-1895) and the master builder Heinrich Ferstel (1828-1883). A new tower was also built between the New Palace and the Nostitz wing.

In 1850 the district court was established in the Redern wing and in 1927 a castle restaurant and the castle administration were set up in the New Castle. After the land reform of 1933, the castle became state property and served as the state agricultural and forestry administration. In the 1950s, an engineering school was set up in the Redern wing. The New Castle and the Nostitz wing were taken over by a glass export company (Skloexport), and from 1986 the Redern wing as well. This company owned one of the largest glass collections in the world, which was housed in the castle.

After the company went bankrupt in 2001, the glass sample collection of around 20,000 pieces was auctioned. The castle is no longer accessible to the public, only the Renaissance chapel is used as a representative room, e.g. B. used for weddings.
