history

Lindach Castle after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674

Lindach is first mentioned in a document in 1080. At that time it belonged to the dominion of Ort im Traunkreis . In 1130 the "noble seat of Dorff and Lindach" is mentioned. In 1470 Leopold Hayden received von und zu Dorff Lindach as a knightly fief .

The design of the castle chapel into a baroque church of St. Margaret was carried out in 1680 by Christoph Adam Hayden von Dorff zu Lindach. The main altar, the side altars and the pulpit were built in 1682. The burial chapel of the Haydens zu Lindach is also located here. Lindach had meanwhile become a princely fief.

The only daughter of Christoph Hayden, Maria Theresia, brought Lindach into her marriage to Karl Josef Oktavian von Frey in 1758. In 1780 the castle was enlarged. Lindach remained in the possession of the Freys until 1810. Then Franz Seraph von Frey sold Lindach and all associated businesses to the middle-class group of Georg and Elisabeth Steinhuber, which appointed administrators in Lindach. The first sugar factory in Upper Austria was located in the castle. Sugar production and the schnapps distillery were given up under the manager Andreas Both, while the brewery was modernized. In 1846, Lindach was owned by Anton Karl Hafferl and his family. In 1870 Lindach was badly damaged by fire.

In 1876 Daniel Ritter von Hornbostel is the owner of Lindach. In 1908 Lindach came to a company. In 1926 another fire broke out, which in turn caused great damage. Then Lindach came to Hannes von Matuschka. This family still lives in the castle today.

Lindach Castle today

Lindach Castle is a long, two-story building with a high mansard roof. It is the only castle in Upper Austria whose courtyard is also the village square. The castle itself is lower than the other buildings compared to the other area. The former castle church is today's village church. As can be seen in the engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674, the church was connected to the castle by a wall. Because of the construction of a road, the wall behind the church was broken through. That is why the church and castle are now separated from each other, and the courtyard has become the village square. The original main facade of the castle was on the side facing away from the church. The three arches of the arbors there rest on stone columns, in front of which there is a terrace and a park. Today's entrance is on the side facing the farm yard. The farm yard will be renovated in 2013.

Today Lindach is an agricultural estate without any industrial side operations. Johannes and Gabriele Matuschka-Gablenz have renovated Lindach Castle in recent years and redesigned the farm buildings into venues for festivities and cultural events. Lindach Castle has also been one of the venues for the Gmunden Festival Weeks since 2002.
