Dorff Castle

The Dorff Castle is located in the town of Schlierbach in Kirchdorf an der Krems District of Upper Austria (Stiftstraße 35).

history

Dorff Castle is the only castle in Upper Austria that has been owned by the Hayden family and thus one and the same family for 600 years . The Hayden von und zu Dorff, who belonged to the knight and later to the baron (raised on June 7, 1888 by Emperor Franz Josef I ), are among the oldest families in Upper Austria. A Berthold Hayden is mentioned as early as 1317, his son Nikolaus in 1360. In a document from the Garsten Abbey , 1327 the Steyr citizen Ruger von Hayden is mentioned. Duke Albrecht II of Austria awarded a Meierhof zu Molln to Ruger and Niklas von Hayden on August 10, 1336 . Thomas von Hayden, son of Niklas, was judge at Kremsmünster and nurse at Scharnstein from 1376 to 1379 . In 1400 Dorff becomes a fiefdom of Duke Albrecht IV of Austria . A document from 1417 allowed Wolfgang von Hayden to serve wine at the castle. In 1607, however, the castle was so dilapidated that it was considered to be "very unlikely that one cannot take hold of it.

In the 17th century, Christoph Benedikt Hayden von Dorff married Beatrix Spindler, owner of Weyer Castle . The Hayden von Dorff also held the possessions of Inzersdorf for a long time and Lindach until 1758 . The heir daughter Susanna of Wolf Siegmund von und zu Dorff married Christoph Adam von Zötliz in 1659, who brought money into the marriage and thus saved the property. Christoph Adam died very soon, so that the castle went to his nephew Christoph Adam von Hayden. The latter had a Fideikommiss established over his possessions in 1711 , which was not lifted until 1939. Around 1755, the Dorff estate consisted of 60 subjects and 66 fireplaces, 28 daily fields, 24 daily meadows, tithes , the wood from the Dorfleiten, two ponds and the fishing water in two streams.

Wolfgang von Hayden owned Dorff until 1913. Knight Freiherr Eduard von Hayden died in 1959 at the age of 75 and bequeathed the property to his granddaughter Angela Beck.

Dorff Castle then and now

The castle on an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer , 1674

As can be seen in an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674, Dorff Castle was a moated castle that was accessible via two bridges. Both bridges led via a gate construction or a gate into a forecourt, from which the actual access to the castle was possible. The two-storey palace building had a square entrance tower, a round tower on one side and a central tower with a clock tower. A wall, which merged into a palisade fence , surrounded the castle and ring moat, an ornamental and kitchen garden and the adjacent Meierhof, which made a very defensive impression.

Today Schloss Dorff gives a much different impression: the surrounding pond has disappeared. The building stock has lost its uniform appearance due to many renovations and additions. Remains of the earlier round tower are still present in the left rear corner of the building. This tower has been dismantled down to roof level. The windows at different heights also indicate several conversions. At the back there are two windows with remarkable window baskets and a stowage bay .

There are two entrances on the front. There is a whitewashed construction seam between the second and third window , which indicates the location of the earlier square tower. The mansard roof is from the time of the last renovation. Allegedly, the inside of the castle is very angled due to the many renovations. Access is the left entrance. The steps are supported with concrete blocks. There is a cannon barrel in front of the castle. Above it is the coat of arms, presumably that of Hayden, which can hardly be recognized. The roof seems to have been renovated recently. The property behind the castle is overgrown and neglected. The walls have many large, static cracks. Previous rescue measures do not seem to have been carried out systematically.

At the place of the disappeared Meierhof there is now an inconspicuous building.
