Wasserburg (Thuringia)
Moated castle

The Wasserburg Ilmenau is a lost moated castle in the middle of the city of Ilmenau in the Ilm district in Thuringia .

history

The pond area in the east of the city was called Sachsenrod and is said to have been settled around 750. The Saalfeld monastery , however, settled with monks at the foot of the Sturmheide around 900 , and that is why the town of Ilmenau developed. During excavation work under the city church at the end of the 1990s, the remains of a Romanesque building from the 10th century were found, which confirms the assumption made by local researcher Paul Bleisch in 1910. They were the remains of a moated castle. Today they are integrated into a new block as a permanent exhibition.

The castle is said to have been founded by the Counts of Käfernburg . The destruction took place in 1289 because of robber barons. The Counts of Schwarzburg built a new castle in the same place in 1324, which they sold to Count Heinrich VIII of Henneberg-Schleusingen in 1343 . The owners then changed more often. In 1613 the castle fell into disrepair. The remains of the castle burned down and were demolished in 1703. Traces of the castle can also be seen in the office building.
