Lourmarin Castle
The Lourmarin Castle ( French Château de Lourmarin ) is a Renaissance castle in the French town of Lourmarin in the Vaucluse department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .
In the 15th century the castle was built by Foulques d'Agoult , in his time chamberlain to King Rene of Anjou , including the remains of a castle from the 12th century. In the period that followed, the building was expanded and changed several times.
After 1526 the castle of Louis d'Agoult-Montauban and his wife Blanche de Lévis-Ventadour became the first Renaissance building in Provence through a Renaissance extension.
At the end of the 16th century, the castle became the property of the Créqui-Lesdiguières family, owners of the Château de La Tour d'Aigues. From that time until the French Revolution , the castle was no longer inhabited by the owners. After the French Revolution, the castle changed hands several times and fell into disrepair. Robert Laurent-Vibert, a cosmetics manufacturer from Lyon , saved the castle from final disintegration and from 1920 had it restored by the architect Henri Pacon. In 1925 Laurent-Vibert died in a car accident. In his will he bequeathed this property to the l'Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres of Aix-en-Provence under the obligation to convert the property into a foundation that supports young artists and organizes events.
