Ludwigsburg Palace is a three-wing city palace in Rudolstadt, Thuringia .

history

It was built between 1734 and 1741 below the Heidecksburg in the Baroque style. At its location there was most likely an older castle , destroyed in 1345 , whose still-present round tower is said to have been blown up after 1730 for the construction of the castle.

The architecturally accentuated central wing contains a rococo hall with rich wall decorations extending over two floors .

The castle initially served Prince Ludwig Günther , the uncle of Prince Johann Friedrich von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , as a residential palace . After Johann Friedrich's death, Ludwig Günther moved to Heidecksburg as his successor in 1767. After their fire, the castle briefly served as the residence of the von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt family.

As a result, the princely drawing school was located in the castle. At times, the building served as a meeting building for the Schwarzburg-Rudolstädter Landtag, museum, ministerial apartment, teachers' seminar and daycare center. Until 1919 the natural history cabinet, known far beyond the borders of Rudolstadt, was housed here.

Today the listed castle is the seat of the Thuringian State Audit Office .

reception

The castle found literary expression in Schiller's story Duke of Alba during breakfast at the castle in Rudolstadt. In 1547 (1788).
