Meienberg Castle is an extensive castle -like complex on the Meienberg in Jona , part of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

Building history

With increasing industrialization, the majority of the factory owners who settled in Rapperswil became citizens of Jona, where they could still acquire enough land, and this is how the factory owners' villas Grünstels and Meienberg emerged. Johann Jakob Staub acquired a plot of land on the Meienberg, built an elegant country estate in classicist style from 1828 and combined this with other plots to form an extensive landscape park. Staub's daughter married the industrialist Jakob Braendlin-Näf , who was already living on the Meienberg . In 1824 the Pfäfers monastery sold the Meienberg terrace to the Braendlin brothers and the Pfauenwirt Heussi. In the first half of the 19th century, the lower Meienberg belonged to the Helbling family. In 1912/13 the Swiss Abroad Albert Meyer-von Reutercrona acquired the Meienberggut.

use

The extensive area with a centrally arranged pond and park is still privately owned today and is usually not open to the public.
