Pfongau Castle

The Pfongau Castle is located in the same district of the municipality Neumarkt am Wallersee in the Flachgau the federal state Salzburg .

history

Pfongau was already settled in Roman times, as the "sensational" find of the Venus von Pfongau in the area of a villa rustica on the Winklerfeld testifies. The place Pfongau (Fangauuvae) has existed in the Neumarkt area since the 8th century.

The Pfongau estate was a fiefdom of the Archduchy ob der Enns. In 1267 a Phangowarius was mentioned in negotiations about the towers in Reisberg, Griffen and Finkenstein in Carinthia. A Pfongauer family of castle keepers has been found in Carinthia in the Villach area in the 15th century . In 1413 and 1432 Cunrad Öder zu Pfangaw is called, in 1453 a Pauls Aller zu Pfongä and in 1495 Conrad Wing (ler) zu Pfongau. Emperor Maximilian I enfeoffed Wolfgang Rainer with the property. On February 28, 1522, King Ferdinand I enfeoffed the brothers Wolfgang, Symon and Jakob Rainer with the "Sytz and Hof zu Phanngew". On October 1, 1545, Jakob Rainer, nurse of Golling , was enfeoffed with Pfongau alone. His successor was Hanns Absalom Ridler von Pfongau auf Obing, Bavarian Mautner zu Straßwalchen. This family appeared on the Salzburger Landtafeln in 1569, 1583 and 1592. On October 23, 1596, Hans Christoph Ridler received "Seat, Court and Tavern in Pfongau" from Emperor Rudolf II . On March 29, 1610 the property was sold to Abraham Graf Uiberacker . The castle remained in their family until 1873, when Johann and Juliane Zauner bought the estate. This was followed by Georg Plainer on October 25, 1919, and then on August 26, 1930, the estate passed on to Georg and Anna Plainer. On May 12, 1931, Johann and Elisabeth Kistner bought the residence.

Pfongau Castle today

Since the “imperial leasable seat or Schloss Pfongau” was already very dilapidated in 1727, permission to demolish and rebuild was obtained from the Archbishop's Councilor. The old castle was broken down to the foundations. The new baroque palace was then completed by 1742. In 1738 the Maierhaus and the stables (Pfongau 2, Zipfwirt) were built. In 1841 plans were made to house a Sieghartstein branch school here.

The castle is built on two floors on a rectangular floor plan. A central risalit with five window axes is indicated, the facade is closed by a coved cornice. A hipped attic roof covers the building. In the basement, the windows are secured with wrought iron bars in a diamond shape and provided with simple cleaning flasks. On the upper floor there are multi-tiered plastering flasks that are connected by a central stone, but above the entrance portal in wave form. In the central axis there is a round arch portal, surrounded by rectangular shapes. A grimace mask forms the keystone.

The interior of the castle is largely unadorned as a lot of renovation work has been carried out. Fluted flat ceilings with curved stucco fields have been preserved on the upper floor. Some of them are artistically designed, for example the coat of arms of the Uiberacker can be found in one, the fresco “The discovery of the boy Moses by the Pharaoh's daughter” in another. The panels show inlaid paintings and still have the original fittings from 1740. In a south-eastern room, the walls are decorated with paintings in a rich Roncailler frame. Hunting scenes with the goddess Diana and Endymion are shown ; Josef Beer comes into question as the creator.

The castle is located near the subsidiary church of St. Martin, it is privately owned and cannot be visited. Rental apartments are located in the castle.
