The Überacker (also spelled Uiberacker or Ueberacker (n) ) were a Bavarian noble family that can be traced back to the 11th century and originally provided servants for the Counts of Burghausen . The family flourished when its members held high positions as administrative officials or in the military in the Archdiocese of Salzburg for centuries and were able to acquire extensive estates. In the 17th century, the Überackers were elevated to the status of barons and finally to the status of imperial counts. Today the family is considered "extinct" in Salzburg; possibly there was or is still a line of the family in Lower Austria , the probably last representative of which is the writer Ernst Josef Uiberacker (born May 28, 1885 in Groß-Enzersdorf , † July 14, 1958 in Felixdorf ).

origin

The Überackers originally had their headquarters in Überackern , near the former Bavarian and now Austrian municipality of Hochburg-Ach in the Braunau am Inn district of Upper Austria . The place name (derived from Über der (Salt) Ache ) itself has undergone numerous changes ( Iparach , Uparachen , Ibrache , Uiberaggern , Überacha , Ibberachen ); since 1850 the place has been called Überackern .

The location of the medieval seat in Überackern is not known for sure, although there are a number of medieval castle stables and fortifications in the area of Hochburg-Ach (e.g. the Ratzlburg , an ancestral seat of the Rohrers ). One assumption is that the ancestral seat of the Überacker family is to be equated with the “high-rise”, of which only earthworks in a swampy meadow (a former pond) at the Braunlechner farm in the Aufhausen district of Überackern remain. But there is also a second site in this area, namely a square rampart called "Burgstall", which is the former seat of the Überacker. In the Battle of Mühldorf in 1322, the Überacker fought on the side of Salzburg Archbishop Friedrich III. von Leibnitz against Ludwig IV the Bavarian ; as the latter won this battle, the Überacker mansion was subsequently destroyed.

Family history

Heinrich I von Uiberacker is the first of this family to be named, and a " liber homo nomine Otto do Uberachin " († 1137) is mentioned as early as 1100. The Überacker can then be traced in Salzburg from the 13th century . In 1281 Wichard and Otto, called Vberekcher , were enfeoffed with fiefs from the Salzburg church.

The first Überacker in the service of the Archdiocese of Salzburg was an Erhard, who was burgrave of Friesach from 1385–1593 . Erhard and his brother Mattheus received the hereditary house and castle hat at the Pirchenstein Fortress from Heinrich Krapff , Bishop of Lavant in 1370 . Heinrich Krapff is referred to as the "brother-in-law" of Otto Überacker.

In 1394 Wolfhart Überacker, son of Johann, is mentioned for the first time in the province of Salzburg. He is entrusted with the care of Lichtentann by Archbishop Pilgrim II of Puchheim . In 1410 Wolfhart and his son Virgil were enfeoffed with the fortress and castle hat on Altentann for life . In 1468, Archbishop Bernhard von Rohr also granted Wolfhart Uiberacker and the sons of the late Ernst Uiberacker the vacated care Lichtentann as absent care (i.e. that they did not have to act personally as carers, but could appoint substitutes ). Altentann had already been assigned to the Uiberackers as hereditary care in 1418, but Lichtentann had to be reassigned each time. In 1607 both areas were combined into one care. After the secularization , the buildings and property from both lords were transferred to the Henndorf brewer Kaspar Moser.

In the middle of the 15th century the Überacker had acquired Lueg Sieghartstein in exchange for properties behind the Pass . In 1444 the Uiberacker became sealable under the title Herren von Sieghartstein . Virgil Uiberacker had a castle (fortress) built here before 1450 ( dy fortress towards the Sigharczstain in the Grunt of the court at Sigharting von New gepawet ). In 1616, Abraham Überacker received a brewing and tavern justice for Sieghartstein (the tavern, founded in 1444, is still there today). In 1610, Abraham Uiberacker also acquired the Pfongau estate, which remained in the family's possession until 1873. Sieghartstein's court rights were given up under Wolf Josef Graf Uiberacker in 1820 and transferred to Neumarkt .

On April 9, 1669, the cousins Wolf Abraham and Wolf Ernst were raised to the status of imperial baron by Emperor Leopold I and were subsequently able to call themselves Well-born and on Sighartstein and Pfangau . On October 27, 1688, Wolf Abraham and his children were raised to the rank of imperial count and are now addressed as high and well-born . Wolf Dominikus was also raised to the status of imperial baron on February 8, 1694 and can from then on also call himself well- born . Finally, Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz, as imperial vicar, elevates the brothers Wolf Dominikus and Wolf Sigmund and their cousin Wolf Max Anton to the hereditary imperial count.

Possessions in Salzburg

In Salzburg, the Überacker family had acquired the Gurkerhof in 1424 from the Salzburg captain Virgil Uiberacker and were able to hold this property until 1747. Since that time Virgil Ueberacker has owned Sighartstein Castle from 1442 and until recently .

The Pfongau castle was purchased in 1610 by Abraham Count of Uiberackern and remained until 1873 in the possession of this family. In Sam in the Langwied district of Salzburg, the Weingarten family owned the farm . Wolf Franz Graf Überacker owned the Überackerhof in Anif . In the city of Salzburg, Wolf Maximilian Graf Überacker bought the building, now known as Graf-Überacker-Palais, in 1723 and converted it into an aristocratic palace and family home.

Under the successors of Abraham Uiberacker († 1607) the family was divided into a Siegharstein line (beginning with Wolf Kaspar, † 1666) and a Pfongauer line (beginning with Wolf Erenreich, † 1646). The last Überacker of the Siegharter line in the male line was Wolfgang Christoph Graf von Uiberacker, appointed President of the Reichshof Council in Vienna by Emperor Josef II . He was not married and was the last male member of the Sieghartstein line. However, he managed to pay off his two sisters with a large sum and to convert Pfongau and Sieghartstein into a Fideikommiss , so that the entire property of the family (until Pfongau was sold in 1873) was retained. The last of the Salzburg Uiberackers was obviously Wolf Arnulf Graf von Uibeacker (* 1911, † 1979), who died childless. In 1964, Gabrielle Pálffy, née Uiberacker, took over the Sieghartstein estate for her son Martin Pállfy. However, he was unable to hold the property and so Sieghartstein was sold to the exhibition manager Arnold Henhapl in 1992. After it slipped into bankruptcy in 2009, the property was auctioned and then, after several attempts to sell it, came to Baron Ernst von Gecmen-Waldeck in 2012.

  1. According to Neweklowsky (1973, p. 155) there are only seven primeval noble families in Upper Austria whose male line and their name can be traced from the 11th century to the present day. At the moment there are only five left, namely the Starhemberger , the von Abensperg and Traun , the Hardegger , the Lasberger and the Schallenberger ; the families of the Überacker as well as the Hayden von Dorff can be regarded as finished.
