The former Theatine monastery in Salzburg is located in the city of Salzburg (Kajetanerplatz 1). Today in the building complex is A. ö. Brothers of Charity Hospital housed.

history

A St. Anna church and a hospital were first noted at this location in 1150. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich acquired the building to set up a seminary. In 1618 the area was given to the Brothers of Mercy; but since this could not obtain an exemption from the prince-archbishop's jurisdiction, they left Salzburg again. Under Archbishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg , the complex was then handed over to the Theatiners (also called the Kajetaner Order after their second founder ) from Munich , who built a new building and a seminary .

Wolf Benedikt Überacker (born May 2, 1674 in Henndorf) and Felix Fossa until 1729 are known of the provosts of the monastery .

In 1809 the monastery was closed and from then on it was run as a hospital. Between 1810 and 1923 a military hospital was housed here, the so-called troop hospital . The house also served as a reserve hospital during the Second World War .

The palace-like Kajetan Church is located on Kajetanerplatz , to which the hospital is attached. The former monastery complex, which was regularly laid out, can only be recognized as such through the drum dome .

In 1923 the hospital was handed over to the Brothers of Mercy. After the Second World War, a branch of the international refugee organization UNRRA (later IRO , from 1952 UNHCR ) was housed here. In 1950 the bomb-damaged building was returned to the Merciful Brothers, who reopened the hospital the following year after extensive renovation.
