Kim Kyung-uk (* 1971 in Kwangju ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Towards the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s , the so-called New Generation - the generation born in the 1970s - denied the prevailing conservative establishment and intellectual climate. It was a generation unknown to organized resistance, and who became known for expressing themselves in an improvised manner. It grew up in a culture of consumption. At that time, a writer was making his debut in his early twenties. His name is Kim Kyung-uk.

His first short story Outsider (아웃 사이더), published as a student in 1993, follows a first-person narrator who drives past several stops on the Seoul subway, recalling memories of a student he used to teach. While the narrator depicts the expressions of anonymous masses in the urban underground world, he is constantly thinking about film scenes and excerpts from pop music . Kim's first novel Acropolis (아크로 폴리스) depicts life on the university campus in the early 1990s , when students' interest in ideological issues suddenly waned. In his works, Kim focuses on the so-called 1990s generation and the culture that dominated this time.

Not only does Kim have a keen interest in music, he has also published many works in keeping with this visual era that express his interest in films and his cinematic imagination. In fact, the title comes his first short stories -Sammelbandes There is no coffee in Bagdad Café (바그다드 카페 에는 커피 가 없다) of the series Bagdad Café by Percy Adlon from. The cover story from the anthology is about a deputy film director who meets a woman while searching for suitable locations. The title of his novel Morrison Hotel (모리슨 호텔) alludes to the album of the rock band The Doors and its short story collections Who Only Killed Kurt Cobain? (누가 커트 코베인 을 죽였는가) and Leslie Cheung is dead? (장국영 이 죽었다고) have their titles from Kurt Cobain , the frontman of the band Nirvana , who symbolizes the nineties , and from the Hong Kong film star Leslie Cheung . It is noteworthy that both Jim Morrison , the singer of the band The Doors, Kurt Cobain and Leslie Cheung committed suicide.

In his more recent work, Kim's fiction moves away from the realm of contemporary culture. He published the novel The Golden Apple (황금 사과), which is based on Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose , and the novel Millennium (천년 의 왕국), which is about the Dutchman Weltevree, who stranded on the coast of Chosŏn in 1627 .
