history

In 1564, the heirs of Balthasar von Falkenstein sold their rights to Falkenstein Castle to Count Philip IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg .

Two months after the acquisition, Falkenstein Castle burned down completely on April 19, 1564. Count Philipp decided to build a castle in the valley of the Falkensteinbach near the Lieschbach settlement. The foundation stone was laid on August 11, 1566.

Next to the new house there was a beautiful pond, which he had built there, a dairy and a mill:

“Philippsburg. a beautiful lust and Jaghauß / samb in a beautiful garden and Weyher doran / has the Wolgeborn Philips Graff zu Hanaw / Herr zu Lichtenberg / the older born from the ground up / and named Philipsburg after jrer Genaden "

- Bernhart Hertzog : Chronicon Alsatiae

The castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years War in 1633 and was not rebuilt afterwards. The ruins were torn down in the 19th century, the stones were sold and the pond drained. Spolia has been installed on house number 2 in rue du Château .
