Bernhard Hertzog (born January 26, 1537 in Weißenburg ; † 1596/1597 in Wörth an der Sauer ) was a German lawyer and historian.

Live and act

The son of councilor Hans Hertzog attended school in Durlach and Strasbourg grammar school , studied in Heidelberg , where he was enrolled in 1550 and again in 1557. In 1561 he got a job in Zweibrücken as a Palatine clerk. After the death of Palatine Wolfgang von Pfalz-Zweibrücken , he entered the service of Count Philip IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg in 1570 . He became secretary and later bailiff in Wörth, where he remained until his death.

The eldest daughter from her marriage to Elisabeth Breitenacker from Weißenburg on November 4, 1560 married the Strasbourg writer Johann Fischart .

Bernhart Hertzog gained importance through his historical-genealogical Chronicon Alsatiae or Edelsasser Chronick , which appeared in Strasbourg in 1592 by Bernhard Jobin , Fischart's publisher. It was widely used and remains indispensable for the history of Lower Alsace , as Hertzog was able to fall back on sources that are now lost. The Strasbourg chronicle, completed by his contemporary Daniel Speckle in 1587, was designed as a counterpart to Hertzog's chronicle based on a letter from Speckle .

In addition to handwritten collections, especially on the history of the nobility, he wrote a collection of Schiltwache swans (Magdeburg edition around 1580: VD 16 H 2660, copy in Wolfenbüttel).
