Ravel Castle and its garden

The Ravel Castle ( French Château de Ravel ) is located in the municipality of Ravel , in the Auvergnat department of Puy-de-Dôme . It goes back to a medieval castle from the 12th century. In the 18th century it was expanded without destroying the Gothic core. In addition, it was supplemented by a garden by André Le Nôtre . It served as the setting for the film The Children of Monsieur Mathieu .

history

The construction of the castle was started in 1171 by Bernard de Revel. In 1283 Chatard de Ravel sold the complex to King Philip III. of France . The castle was passed on from Philip the Fair to Pierre Flote , Chancellor of France , in 1294 as a reward for his services. The property was inherited by André de Chauvigny in 1431. His daughter Catherine brought it into her marriage to Charles d'Amboise in 1460 .

After changes in ownership due to marriage and inheritance, the castle came into the possession of Jean IV. D'Estaing in 1647. In 1806 it was sold to Charles de Riberolles de Beaucène and is still owned by his descendants. At the request of André de Riberolles on May 20, 1958, it was included in the list of Monument historiques of the French Ministry of Culture.
