Rosendael Castle

Rosendael Castle is originally a late medieval castle that was built by the Count of Geldern. The castle is located in the Gelders village of Rozendaal near Velp in the Netherlands. It is part of the listed historic Rosendael estate. The palace and park are among the TOP 100 of Dutch heritage conservation.

history

The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1314, a count Reinoud I was the first inhabitant. His son Reinoud II was also the lord of the castle.

After the Counts and Dukes of Geldern, the castle became the property of Drosten Willem ab Scherpenzel, who sold it to Dirck van Dorth in 1579. Van Dorth had a lot changed in the castle, he had the gardens and ponds created. Van Dorth was followed by the Van Arnhem, Torck and Van Pallandt families as owners of the estate and the castle. The forest, heather and hunting area Planken Wambuis near Ede has also belonged to the property since 1536.

Under lord Lubbert Adolf Torck, who was married to the extremely wealthy Petronella van Hoorn, the gardens were rebuilt in 1732 under the architect Daniel Marot. The shell galleries were also built during this period.

Shell galleries

Only the residential and defense tower remains of the original castle. It was originally 25 m high, it has a diameter of 16 m. This makes it the largest tower of its kind in the Netherlands. In 1722 a square house was added to the tower. In addition, several outbuildings and stables were built. Thus, the castle became more and more a country palace.

The gardens and ponds were designed in the 19th century by the architect Jan Daniel Zocher jr. changed. Among other things, he merged several smaller ponds into one large one. The shell galleries have also been revised. In the time of Van Pallandt the frauds arose. These are water nozzles hidden in the mosaic floor of a shell gallery, from which water randomly splashes. Visitors who happen to be on this mosaic floor are sprayed wet.

In 1860 the architect Lucas Hermanns Eberson designed an adaptation of the interior with reference to the RJC van Pallandt-Torck couple.

During World War II the castle was hit by an American bomb and the park was partially devastated by a stray V2 rocket . Then the estate fell into disrepair until 1977 when the last Baron Willem Frederik Torck, Baron van Pallandt, transferred it to the Het Geldersche Landschap en Vrienden de Geldersche Kasteelen foundation. The country house and the park have been restored and have been partially open to the public since 1989.

The Planken Wambuis estate was sold to an investment company in 1932.

In 1982 the library, which contains around 3000 books and manuscripts, was restored. a. Letters from Queen Christina of Sweden to the philosopher René Descartes . Jan van Arnhem (1636–1716), lord of the castle, had collected the works at that time.
