From 1580 to 1581, Ludwig von Welser from the Augsburg merchant and financial dynasty of the Welser had the magnificent country palace built. After completion, Ludwig Welser asked the Habsburg Emperor Rudolf II whether he could name the building "Rudolfshausen Castle" in his honor of the Emperor. The emperor agreed and had a corresponding certificate made out.

After Ludwig Welser's early death, Rudolfshausen Castle came into the possession of the widow's new husband, Hans von Gaisberg, Siegler and feudal provost of Prince-Bishop Ernst von Bayern . After his death, Rudolfshausen Castle came into the possession of the Fugger dynasty from Augsburg in 1609 . From 1622 to 1624, when she died, Maria Fugger, b. Countess von Schwarzenberg , widow of Christoph Fugger (a son of Hans Fugger ), in the castle. It went down in the local history of Holzhausen because it had a chapel built in the northern castle garden: the bark chapel, which is still a popular place of grace today.

After that, Rudolfshausen Castle became the property of the Catholic Church, first to the Heilig Kreuz monastery in Augsburg , then to the Steingaden monastery . After the secularization in 1803, the castle became a parish parish and is therefore still owned by the Catholic Church, Diocese of Augsburg .
