Schönberg Castle is a castle in Schönberg am Kapellenberg , today part of the municipality of Bad Brambach in the Upper Vogtland in the extreme southwest of Saxony . With its central location, the castle is characteristic of the place. Due to the slope of the terrain to the south, it is visible from afar.

history

The first documented mention of Schönberg Castle dates from 1261 as a knight's seat in the form of a moated castle for Albert von Schönberg, who came from the Neuberg family, but was now named after his new seat. A transition to the knight Eitel Toss is documented for 1343 . In the 14th and early 15th centuries, the Lords of Kospod owned the Schönberg manor, which was developed in connection with the castle. Other short-term owners were Hans von Rabe and Heinrich von Röder. From the middle of the 15th century, the castle was owned by the von Zedtwitz family , including Parakeet von Zedtwitz , until after 1485 it came to the von Reitzenstein barons via his widow Anna . It remained in their possession for 460 years.

In 1685 a three-storey mansion with a five-axis facade and a flat hipped roof was built around the square watchtower (from 1485) with an octagonal tower. Also from 1685 is an octagonal fountain basin with a stone figure and the family's coat of arms. The Schönberg manor developed into the sixth largest in the Vogtland. The last mistress of the castle was Margarethe Pia Magyari (1876–1945), born baroness von Reitzenstein. After the expropriation in 1945 , she was deported to the island of Rügen , where she also died.

The expropriated fields of the property were divided up to new farmers and in the following years apartments, post office, municipal office, school, cinema, library, children's holiday camp and much more were housed in the castle, until the state of construction had deteriorated so that only one room could be used . The castle has been privately owned again since 1994 and has been extensively renovated.
