history

The Schengen Castle was first mentioned in writing on May 5, 1350. After many changes of ownership, it was bought by industrialist Jean-Nicolas Collart in 1793. He had most of it demolished and erected in 1812 - largely with the existing building materials - the current building, which can best be described as a mansion .

The symmetry and division of the three rows of windows each with nine windows and the mezzanine window give the building a castle-like / stately expression. The initials JNC on the facade are from the name J EAN N icolas C derived ollart.

Victor Hugo drew the old tower during his stay on September 13, 1871. The exit to the banks of the Moselle is first mentioned in 1451. This exit shows a statue of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen and boatmen and the coat of arms of the castle.

In 1939 the castle was taken over by the Congregation Sœurs de Sainte Élisabeth , who used it as a holiday center and conference center as well as a rest and retirement home. From 2010 to 2014 the castle was rented to the Luxembourg hotel chain Goeres, which operated a hotel there. Since then the buildings have stood empty and should be sold. A Luxembourg company bought the castle with its 5,000 square meters of living space and 1.3 hectare property in 2016 for eleven million euros.

The palace's baroque garden is part of the Gardens without Borders project .
