Stolberg Castle in Schwarza

Stolberg Castle is the former property of the Counts of Stolberg in Schwarza in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

The castle was built between 1535 and 1538 on the remains of the medieval Schwarza moated castle. The new building was carried out on behalf of Count Albrecht von Henneberg , who had it with his wife Catharina, née. Countess von Stolberg, served as residence.

In 1549, after the death of the last Henneberg Count of the Römhild line , the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Stolberg, whose seat it was until 1748. At the beginning of the 18th century the castle was extensively rebuilt and expanded, the north wing was built between 1730 and 1735. In 1887 the castle was sold, further changes of ownership followed. At times the castle served as a cigar factory, and in 1948 services for the Catholic parish were held in the castle. Parts of the castle were rented out as apartments. In 1965 the Suhl District Council acquired the castle and in 1967 transferred it to the Schwarza municipality. This set up the seat of the municipal administration, cultural areas, the registry office and a library in the castle. In 1992 the municipality sold the castle to an investor who initially let it fall into disrepair.

The bower as the oldest part of the castle has been reconstructed in recent years. Part of the building is used as a community library, large parts are still empty.
