history

Viehofner Castle was first mentioned in the Göttweiger traditions in 1130 , but the castle is classified as older. 1179 confirmed Pope Alexander III. in a document the ownership rights of the diocese of Passau to the castle, but the castle chapel is not mentioned for the first time until 1248. In this document, the castle and chapel are shown to be owned by the St. Pölten Monastery . In the 12th and 13th centuries the ministerial family of the "Viehofner" is documented, in the early 14th century Reinprecht von Wallsee became a fiefdom holder of the Viehofen rule. The castle remained in the possession of the Wallseer until the end of the 15th century. After various brief owners, the rule came to Bernhard von Kirchberg in 1508 . He received the castle from the sovereign, who had bought it in 1491 from the bishops of Passau. The property remained with the Kirchbergers until around 1640, after which several lords of the castle followed: The castle passed from the von Wuschletitsch in 1665 to the Counts of Herberstein , who passed it on to von Wellenstein as early as 1712. In 1745 the Counts of Kuefstein took over the castle and remained in possession of it until 2003.

Until the opening of the church in Viehofen in 1898, the chapel of the castle was the parish church of the then independent community. The castle was habitable and furnished until 1945. The Russian occupation troops, who used the castle as an ammunition store, and after their withdrawal the population, devastated the complex. In the following decades the castle fell into ruin , and in 1966 part of the castle was demolished. In the following years the roof and the roof structure collapsed. Josef Figl only bought the complex from bankruptcy in 2003 and has been renovating it since then.
