Surname

The ending -hofen indicates a very old age.

The name Viehofen originated either from many yards or from Viehof .

history

A first settlement around the year 750 BC. BC indicate archaeological finds discovered in Ragelsdorf.

Viehofen probably belonged to an old royal settlement before it came to the Passau diocese in 823 from Charlemagne .

The place was first mentioned in 1130 as Vihofen , the castle was first mentioned in 1170, when the diocese was confirmed as the owner.

In 1805 and 1809 Viehofen was sacked by Napoleon's troops, who also used the castle as a hospital.

In 1810 the first school was held in an inn, and a separate building was opened in 1878.

From the early 19th century Viehofen became one of the industrial centers of today's city of St. Pölten. On the site of the k. k. priv. Spiegelfabrik , the lace, bobbinet and curtain factory F. Austin was founded in 1867 and existed until 1930.

In the years after 1885 an economic upswing followed, including the opening of the railway and the regulation of the Traisen. The first church was completed in 1898.

On January 1, 1923, Viehofen was incorporated into the city of St. Pölten, Ragelsdorf (with more, until 1961: Weidern ), which became an independent municipality, followed in 1969.

politics

As the cadastral municipality of St. Pölten, Viehofen does not have its own municipal council; the mayors before 1922 can be found in the list of mayors of St. Pölten .

economy

Established businesses

The Traisenpark and Traisencenter shopping centers are located in Viehofen .

The district is also home to Metro , Forstinger and various car dealerships.

Contaminated sites

Between 1930 and 1990, waste was deposited on an area of 65,000 m² east of the former company location of Glanzstoff Austria in the Traisen floodplain, the “Traisenau”. The majority of these deposits have low levels of contamination and they pose little risk to the groundwater. On the eastern edge, however, there are deposits of around 24,000 m³, which at times caused high levels of contamination with mineral oil hydrocarbons and metals in the groundwater, which represent a considerable risk to the environment.

Public facilities

In Viehofen there are two elementary schools and one secondary school as well as three kindergartens.
