history

The castle was first mentioned in 977 as a Salzburg property. The Alachthof, the predecessor of today's castle, was first mentioned in 1268.

The castle came into the possession of Sebastian Grabner the Elder in 1505 , who had the castle expanded until 1527 based on the model of the Rosenburg Castle, which he also owned . The decisive renovations were carried out under Sebastian Grabner the Younger around 1600, when the outer bailey was expanded into a two-wing residential palace.

After a few changes of ownership, modifications were made to the east wing at the beginning of the 19th century and around 1920. It has been the property of the Trauttmansdorff family since 1926 ; towards the end of the Second World War, the castle owners at that time were murdered as part of a resistance group . The castle was in the combat zone and was badly damaged and was besieged by Soviet troops until 1955.

The tower collapsed in 1961 and was rebuilt in 1966 with public support.

From 1970 on, a tin figure museum with 35,000 figures was set up in the old castle, which has since been closed.

The New Palace has been completely renovated in recent years.

Today's form

On the left the four-storey "old castle" and on the right the two-winged "residential castle" or "new castle".

Today, the castle essentially consists of the part called Old Castle , which was built in the Middle Ages, and the New Castle, built around 1600 .

The old castle is a four-storey building with a rectangular floor plan, with a steep double hipped roof and the high tower with an onion helmet on the northeast corner. A narrow gallery runs around the fourth floor.

The two-winged new castle, the outer fronts of which is on the water, is flanked by octagonal towers.

The moats of the castle are still filled with water and are fed by the Pottenbrunner Brunnader (Föhrenbach), a right tributary of the Traisen . A bridge leads to the entrance of the new castle. Since the castle is inhabited, it can only be viewed from the outside.

The Pottenbrunn learning workshop is now located in parts of the palace, an alternative educational private school with public rights that is supported by an association.
