Life

Laurenz Janscha (also: Lorenz Jantscha or Lovro Janša ), son of the farmer Matthias Janscha (1683–1752) and Lucia Debellak (1705–1781), was admitted to the copper engraving academy in Vienna around 1770; there he received his training in landscape drawing from Johann Christian Brand . Another teacher was Franz Edmund Weirotter . From 1780 he also worked on etchings. In 1785 Janscha worked on the collection de 50 vues de la ville de Vienne of the Vienne publishing house Artaria ; he contributed watercolors for seven mostly landscape sheets. As a result, the artist concentrated on producing vedute and views of the Vienna area and other areas, which were published as copperplate engravings or etchings by various Viennese publishers , for example by Johann Ziegler , and were widely used. In 1803 he painted a large panorama of Vienna based on a template , which was shown in a showroom in the Prater and in other cities.

In 1797 Janscha succeeded Carl Philipp Schallhas as a proofreader in the landscape drawing class at the Vienna Academy . In 1806, after the death of Friedrich August Brands, he was appointed director of the master school; In 1811 he was also awarded the title of professor. Janscha was married to Theresia Rindfleisch (1760-1806), a daughter of the watch case maker Johann Michael Rindfleisch (marriage 1786 in Vienna).
