Johann Andreas Ziegler
Johann Andreas Ziegler (born July 11, 1749 in Meiningen , Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen , † March 18, 1802 in Vienna ) was a painter ( vedute draftsman ) and copperplate engraver .
Ziegler was the son of master shoemaker Johann Wolfgang Ziegler and came from a modest background. Franz Josef Graf Thun (1734–1800), whom he initially served as a page, enabled him to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1769 due to Thun's connections to the Viennese Freemasons . He traveled a lot through Austria and mainly painted landscapes. The vedute series " Collection de 50 vues de la ville de Vienne ", which he created under the direction of Carl Schütz together with Laurenz Janscha from 1779 to 1798 and which was published by Artaria , made him known. The engravings of Ziegler found a large distribution. He committed suicide in 1802. The circumstances of his death in the Vienna River were initially unclear and could only be clarified by the local researcher Gustav Gugitz .
