Jakob Matthias Schmutzer: Portrait of Franz Edmund Weirotter, 1775

Franz Edmund Weirotter (born May 29, 1733 in Innsbruck , † May 11, 1771 in Vienna ) was an Austrian landscape painter and etcher .

Life

Franz Edmund Weirotter lost his parents at the age of seven and was raised by an aunt in Innsbruck until he was 14 years old. During this time Weirotter learned to paint and copy paintings, whereby his first contact with painting happened with Franz Michael Hueber from Innsbruck . From 1751 to 1755, his stay at the Vienna Art Academy is documented. He then worked for art dealers and various clients. During his first stay in Paris (1759–1763) he made the acquaintance of Johann Georg Wille . The friendly connection with Wille and the training in the circle of artists that had formed around him led to a turning point in Weirotter's work. Wille had people drawn in the great outdoors in order to train the eye for impressions of the landscape and to make them receptive to the beauties of nature. He later used these drawings for etchings . Weirotter renounced documentary loyalty, unlike the vedutists , in favor of integrating the architecture into the landscape.

A grant from the French Royal Academy enabled Weirotter to spend one year in Rome (1763–1764). Wille gave him letters of recommendation to Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Anton Raphael Mengs , which gave him access to the leading German artistic circles. The contacts to the French artists came about through the "Academie de France à Rome". During his stay in Italy, Weirotter also visited the area around Rome and Tivolis as well as Livorno , Viterbo and Florence .

During his second stay in Paris (1764-1767) Weirotter made friends with Jacob Matthias Schmutzer , another Austrian student of Wille. When Schmutzer went to Vienna as head of the copper engraving academy, which was newly founded in 1766 , he arranged for Weirotter to be appointed professor of landscape drawing. Weirotter was to take on the lessons in the great outdoors and instruct the students in drawing and etching landscapes.
