Ochsenburg Castle

The ox Castle is a castle in St. Pölten . It stands on an approximately 30 meter high ledge on the right bank of the Traisen in the southernmost St. Pölten district of Ochsenburg .

history

The medieval castle of Mr. Ochsenburger was converted into a palace in the style of the Renaissance in the course of the 16th century . The baroque south wing was probably only built around 1698 under Jakob Prandtauer . In the 18th century, the Nikolauskapelle in the castle was redesigned, here Martin Johann Schmidt played a major role.

From 1383 to 1530 the castle was owned by the canons of St. Pölten . In 1699 it was bought again by the monastery under provost Christoph Müller. In the course of the Josephine reforms , the St. Pölten monastery was dissolved in 1784 and the castle was added to the Lower Austrian religious fund. In 1785 the newly established diocese of St. Pölten received the right of use. During the Second World War the castle was used as a hospital and then fell into disrepair. Since the renovation, the castle has served the St. Pölten bishops as a summer residence. In 2010 it became known that the diocese of St. Pölten is offering Ochsenburg Castle for sale for around three million euros. Since no buyer could be found by mid-2011, it was announced that the castle would be renovated and could be rented for celebrations. However, a buyer is still being sought.

The castle and the manor directly to the east are under monument protection.
