The place spatters located in Lower Austria at the Traisen between St. Georgen am Steinfelde in the south, Harland and Stattersdorf the east, St. Pölten in the north and Ober-Grafendorf in the West and is a district of St. Poelten . Spratzern was incorporated in 1923, Völtendorf, Schwadorf and Pummersdorf were incorporated in 1939.

Spratzern is generally used only to refer to the area south of the Westautobahn , in fact the area of the cadastral municipality extends to the Franz-Jonas-Straße - Hacklgasse in the north. The place has grown together completely with the urban area in the last decades, the borders exist essentially only as territorial units in the land register.

Surname

The name Spratzern can be traced back to two different origins.

  • spratz- from "splashing" or "spraying" and is traced back to the rapids of the Traisen
  • Settlers from the Spratztal , a tributary of the Rabnitz , which is considered the more likely variant.

history

The first Bavarian settlers are likely to have settled in the area around the year 900, the first documented mentions can be found from the 12th century.

The first stage on the way from the farming village to the district took place in 1850, when Spratzern became a municipality to which Teufelhof, Pummersdorf, Nadelbach, Hafing and Schwadorf belonged. In 1877 it was connected to the railroad .

During the First World War there was a POW camp in Spratzern . After the camp was closed, many railway workers who worked in the Wörth works moved into the barracks . This changed the population profile permanently. Infrastructural facilities such as schools and churches grew , and more and more shops were opened.

The incorporation in 1923 and the regulation of the Traisen , which offered the opportunity to colonize the former floodplains, led to further growth . In the years from 1938 to 1958 the Westautobahn was built in the Spratzern area , until 1945 almost exclusively by prisoners of war labor.

The Traisen Bridge in Spratzern was blown up by Russian troops in April 1945.

POW camp

In Spratzern there were prisoner of war camps in both world wars .

The prisoner-of-war camp in World War I began construction in September 1914. In total, eight groups of sixteen barracks each were built, in which around 75,000 prisoners were imprisoned. In 1918 the camp was dissolved and demolished.

During the Second World War , the camp with "work details" was located next to the motorway construction site. The camp was disbanded by the Red Army.

politics

As the cadastral municipality of St. Pölten, Spratzern does not have its own municipal council; the mayors prior to 1922 can be found in the list of mayors of St. Pölten .
