history

The area was a natural meadow until the 1940s . During the Second World War there was a forced labor camp for 126 people, mostly Hungarian Jews .

In 1966 the license to operate a sand and gravel extraction plant was granted. The dismantling was carried out from 1967 by the Pottenbrunn entrepreneur Karl Paderta. The two lakes were created through dismantling until 1985.

After the city of St.Pölten had tried to get the lakes since the mining stopped, it was able to acquire the lakes in the summer of 2003. She received the lakes in return for the development costs of the garden city on Kremser Berg.

In February 2005 the new usage concept for the Viehofner Lakes was presented.

In April 2005, the St. Pölten municipal council decided to extend the building in a natural way. The smaller of the two lakes and the entire west bank should be preserved for the fauna and flora. A swimming jetty , a children's bay and a toilet facility were approved for € 150,000.

At the beginning of June 2006, the “See-Hafen” (jetties for rowing boats ), a surfing ramp and a 30-meter-long deck with a swimming platform could be used.

The observation tower opened in 2006

The 103 meter long covered pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the Traisen between the Viehofner Lakes and the Ratzersdorfer See was opened in September 2006. Around 500,000 euros were invested in this. Two days later, an 11.5 meter high observation tower was opened between the two Viehofen lakes .

Flora and fauna

The area consists of the two lakes with a total of approx. 24 hectares, the rest consists of floodplain landscape or of subsequently reforested black pine monolayer cultures . In addition to the endangered black poplar and field elm , the narrow-leaved cattail, which is rare in St. Pölten, can also be found on the bank of the pond.

In the small pond there are large carpets with the endangered swimming pondweed .

Since the closure, the lakes have developed into an important habitat for bird species that have already become extremely rare in Lower Austria, such as the black-necked grebe , the goosander and the kingfisher . In total, over 70 species of birds can be found here, 38 of which are also breeding.

In addition, the ponds represent an important habitat for amphibians and reptiles. So far, pond frogs , common toads , grass snakes and slow worms have been identified.

Moreover, at least 15 were dragonfly species as Königslibelle , Azure Damselfly , cup Azurjungfer , common darter and red-veined darter found. The northern pond with its large populations of aquatic plants is important for the dragonfly fauna; the rare red fire dragonfly was also discovered there.

In 2006 the city of St.Pölten received a special prize from the Nature Conservation Union for the development of the Viehofner Lakes.
