The Zichy Palace is located in present-day Budapest district Óbuda .

history

The building is located in the middle of the remains of Óbuda's old town, which came into the possession of the Zichy family after the Ottomans left at the end of the 17th century . It was built from 1746 to 1757 for Count Miklós Zichy by the builder Henrik János Jäger in the Baroque era . The castle was badly damaged in World War II and has been partially restored in recent years. The restoration measures of the castle and its farm wing have not yet been completed (2008) and parts of the buildings are still in need of renovation.

Today it served as a cultural center and houses several museums. There are three different museums in the Zichy Castle and the farm buildings; The Kassák Museum is dedicated to the expressionist painter and poet Lajos Kassák , the Vasarely Museum to the work of the painter and graphic artist Victor Vasarely . The Óbudas City Museum is located in a wing of the farm building.

The castle is regularly involved in other cultural events, so in summer the courtyard often serves as an open-air stage for opera performances.

architecture

The castle is a simple, two-story palace with thirteen axes , which is surrounded on three sides to the west by an extensive gate or farm building. The facade with the main portal is oriented to the east on a branch of the Danube , but its effect was greatly impaired by later construction work and is now partially overgrown.
