The Große Wünsdorfer See is a 180 hectare lake in the Brandenburg district of Teltow-Fläming . It is located around forty kilometers south of Berlin in the Wünsdorf district of Zossen near the federal highway 96 .

Geology and etymology

The up to eleven meters deep water is part of the lake chain Wolziger See - Großer Wünsdorfer See - Kleiner Wünsdorfer See - Mellensee , which flows from the Mellensee over the Notte Canal into the Dahme . The chain of lakes is located on the southwestern edge of the Wünsdorfer Platte in the Töpchiner Talung, a glacial channel from the Vistula Ice Age . At the southeastern tip, water from the Wolziger See flows into the Großer Wünsdorfer See via a ditch. The approximately three kilometer long Wünsdorfer Canal drains the lake at its southwestern tip into the Mellensee. Another ditch runs to the Kleiner Wünsdorfer See, which is about 400 meters away to the northwest.

Inflow of the Wolziger See

One of the two historic town centers of Wünsdorf is located between the Great and Small Wünsdorfer See. The area between the lakes was probably populated as early as Slavic times. The name Wünsdorf is possibly derived from the male Slavic personal name Wojin .

Leisure and ecology

The Great Wünsdorfer See is not very well developed for tourism. An approximately eight kilometer long circular route, which is part of stage 11 of the 66 lakes hike around Berlin , only leads directly to the water in a few places. The Schwanenwiese on the south-east bank and the picnic meadows on the south-west bank in the Neuhof district of Wünsdorf and, in particular, the Zossen-Wünsdorf lido on the northern tip near the old Wünsdorf village center offer direct access. The pool has an elongated section of the bank with a smaller section of heaped sand, which is located on a double jetty protruding far into the lake. There is a beach volleyball field, a table tennis table and a children's playground on a wide lawn, which is occasionally lined with alders and oaks. A kiosk and sanitary facilities are also available to guests. Lifeguards are not available.

At the lido

However, due to high eutrophication , the water is so cloudy that the authorities considered a bathing ban in 2007. An environmental assessment, the University of Cottbus undertook based on fish, ordered the non-layered , tailed waters on a scale of one to eight on the Seeklasse seven. The volume quotient (VQ), a measure of the effect of the catchment area on the material balance of a lake, was> 1.5 in this study.

The fish fauna include pikeperch , pike , eel and tench . Some shoreline sections is found in Brandenburg endangered and protected viper . A dense mixed forest of spruce, alder, birch and oak stretches up to the bank, which is mostly covered with reeds, especially in the southern and southwestern area . In parts, alder fragments have survived .
