Palace Library (Berlin)
The Berlin Palace Library was the library of the Prussian kings and was housed in the Berlin Palace .
The library was founded in 1862 under the name of the Royal House Library , and since 1928 it has been called the Castle Library . The library comprised the book holdings of the Prussian kings since Frederick the Great , who had a library in each of his castles. Queen Luise's libraries have also been part of it since 1865 . The books of these two previous owners were relocated to the Bernterode mine in 1943. After the war , the books ended up in the Central Collecting Point Wiesbaden and in 1957 became the property of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in Berlin. The library went on permanent loan from the foundation to the administration of the State Palaces and Gardens of Berlin . Since the 1990s, they have had the library set up in Potsdam in the Sanssouci , New Palace and City Palace as well as in Charlottenburg Palace, based on provenance history. The remaining parts of the palace library ended up in the New Palace in Potsdam at the end of World War II. After the end of the war, they were transported away by the Red Army and are now in Moscow . When cultural goods were first returned to the GDR (1957–1959), some of the music in the collection was returned to the State Library in Berlin .
