Old brewery in the castle

The Hirschau Castle Brewery is a small castle brewery in Hirschau in the Upper Palatinate .

history

When Andreas Dorfner took over the property from his father Georg Michael Dorfner in 1780, Andreas Dorfner took over the brewing rights to which every Hirschau homeowner is entitled. In the communal brewery, a new regulation from 1749 allowed a quarter of a brew to be produced for every 50 guilders of taxable assets. In 1802 Andreas Dorfner built a cellar house in front of the city. Four years later, he was one of the “strongest brewers” in the town.

On October 20, 1812, eight Hirschau residents purchased the communal brewery from the community and converted it into a society brewery. With this purchase, Andreas Dorfner acquired three of the ten shares. Each shareholder brewed and sold the beer independently.

On December 13, 1817, Andreas Dorfner acquired the former Hirschau nursing home. In 1819 he had a brewery built in the palace garden. Since then, the brewery has been owned by the Dorfner family.

Five years after his son Florian Dorfner took over the brewery, there were more violent storms and floods in Hirschau. As a result, the ponds around the city and the castle pond were drained. In order to have enough water for brewing the beer, he had a one-kilometer-long water pipe made of dikes from the whale pond . The drawbars were later replaced by lead pipes. After a first well was drilled in the brewery in 1914 and a second well in 1926, the water pipeline was decommissioned in 1920.

In 1874 a malt house was added as part of an expansion . In 1958 the bottling plant and the distillery were rebuilt, and shortly afterwards the cellar. In 1967 Franz Dorfner decided to completely rebuild the brewery, which was completed in 1969.

Between 1980 and 1993, the adjoining restaurant was converted into a castle hotel under the management of the late Franz Dorfner's wife. Franz Dorfner (son of the same name) has been running the family business since 1994, now in the 7th generation.

The new brewhouse was inaugurated in May 2016. The new plant allows the production of smaller quantities of special types of beer. Units of 1000 to 2000 liters can be brewed per brew.

Types of beer

The beers produced can only be bought regionally from the brewery and in some selected shops. The following types of beer are produced:

  • Dorfner Hell
  • Dorfner Pils
