The Thörl Castle is located in the municipality Thörl , right on Thörl Bach and Mariazellerstraße north of Bruck an der Mur in Styria ( Austria ) to approximately  630  m above sea level. A.

The building developed in three construction phases from a road block / weir system called toer in the Aynoed (first mentioned in a document in 1345). It stretched from the bank of the Thörlbach in the east to a rocky outcrop in the west. Remains of the gate have been preserved in the Jägerturm to this day. From the 17th to the 19th century, the complex was expanded and converted into a castle or a manorial union headquarters . Today the castle is owned by a family foundation and is used for residential and representative purposes. The Barbara Chapel is used for festive events and functions.

Building history

The expansion of Vessten am Thörl into the trade headquarters began in 1450 by Sebald I. Pögel (northeast wing). The renovation work was probably finished in 1510, as the year on the gate tower indicates. In 1630 Jörg von Klingtraht expanded the NO wing (today's east wing) and renovated the Barbara chapel. In 1740 Franz Gasteiger, who had been a tradesman at Thörl since that year, and his wife Anna-Maria expanded the property into a castle (connection of the chapel with the east wing, renovations on the south side). Gasteiger died in 1747 and his widow completed the renovation. In 1767, Josef Karl Gasteiger Edler von Lorberau commissioned Josef A. von Mölck to decorate the south front of the palace with frescoes. After 1855 Ignaz and Maria Fürst removed some parts of the building from the 18th century and the late medieval wall, as they hindered the steadily growing through traffic. Between 1871 and 1872 the castle was rebuilt, including v. a. the relocation and redesign of the Jägerturm to make room for the re-routing of Mariazellerstraße. In the 1980s, the building was extensively restored by the owners with the expert support of the Federal Monuments Office . The Jägerturm was renovated in 1991 by the municipality of Thörl.

After the death of the owner Karl Hempel, grandson of the Ignaz Fürst trade , in 2015 the castle was transferred to a family foundation. In April 2018 it was announced that the castle would be sold for around 1.5 million euros.

The palace chapel was built immediately to the south-west and completed by 1469 at the latest. It was rebuilt from scratch in the middle of the 18th century. She is St. Barbara , the patron saint of miners.
