Ismaning Castle Museum

The Castle Museum Ismaning in the gardener's cottage of the castle in Ismaning in the district of Munich shows objects, documents and photos on the cultural history of the place and the palace complex. The focus of the collection is the documentation of the ducal family Beauharnais - Leuchtenberg and the development of the Ismaning community in the 19th and 20th centuries.

History of the castle museum

The Ismaning Castle Museum was opened on July 26, 1986 in the entrance area of the coach house of the castle complex. One year later, the collection was expanded. After more than 20 years in which the presentation remained almost unchanged, the museum said goodbye to coachbuilding in January 2008. For a while, parts of the exhibition were shown in a building of the former castle economy, the so-called peat station . On July 14, 2010, the gardener's house in the castle park was reopened with a contemporary concept and a significantly expanded permanent exhibition.

collection

The collection of the castle museum in the gardener's house includes objects, documents and pictures on the cultural history of the place mentioned for the first time in 809.

The permanent exhibition gives an insight into the history of the palace, which in the Baroque period served as the summer residence of the prince-bishops of the Freising Monastery. The 19th century is presented in detail, when the palace complex was given its classical form under Princess Auguste of Bavaria , Duchess of Leuchtenberg from 1816 . Models of the old Ismaningen train station and the paper mill, which has largely been preserved to this day, document the recent history of the place. In addition, visitors will find information about infrastructure, agriculture and trade. A museum rally and a dedicated children's area enable young visitors to explore the museum independently.

The special exhibits include:

  • a baroque altarpiece (2nd half of the 18th century) from the Ismaninger Johanniskirche, which was demolished in 1904
  • the portrait and miniature collection of the Beauharnais family - Leuchtenberg
  • the model of the old Ismaning train station with the peat railway
  • the functional model of a self-acceptance machine from the Ismaning paper mill

The permanent exhibition is regularly supplemented by special exhibitions on a wide variety of topics from Ismaning's history.

In addition, the castle museum looks after the (not freely accessible) historical state rooms in Ismaning Castle and the exhibition in the old sawmill of the Seidl-Mühle cultural and educational center . Guided tours can be organized for both locations on request.
