Narrow-leaved barberry

The narrow-leaved barberry ( Berberis × stenophylla ) (also known as yolk barberry ) is a species of the genus of barberries ( Berberis ). It is a hybrid of Darwin's barberry ( Berberis darwinii ) and the crowberry-leaved barberry ( Berberis empetrifolia ). It was described by John Lindley in The Gardeners' Chronicle in 1864 . The species name refers to the shape of the leaves ("narrow-leaved"). The English name for this species is Rosemary Barberry.

description

The evergreen plant can grow into a medium-sized shrub. The bark of the twigs is reddish brown in color, the twigs are arched overhanging. The dark green leaves are narrow-lanceolate, with entire margins, prickly, sometimes toothed, up to 2.5 inches long; the leaf margins are bent to the underside, whereby the underside of the leaf is only visible as a whitish stripe. The leaf spines are usually three-part and less than 1 centimeter long. The golden yellow flowers stand in pairs to six in clusters or clusters and densely cover the branches in spring. The round fruits are blue-black and frosted.

use

The narrow-leaved barberry emerged as a cultivated form and has been in cultivation since around 1860.
