Schmalwieser (family name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schmalwieser is a rare Upper Austrian family name.

origin

The name Schmalwieser referred to the owners of the Hub zu Smalwiesen ( Pennewang , Upper Austria). The name Schmalwieser was first mentioned on St. Lucien Day (December 13th) 1383 in a certificate of award. In this, Ulrich, Abbot of Lambach, gives the real right of inheritance to the Hub zu Weilspach (in Pennewang) to Hainreich (= Heinrich) Smalwiser, son of Niklas Smalwiser. The Huben zu Smalwiesen and zu Weisbach are mentioned in a document in 1494 in an award document regulating the large and small tithe by King Maximilian . Hans Schmalwieser and his wife Rosina (née Muggenberger) were the last Schmalwieser to Schmalwiesen around 1630. Thereafter ownership of the property passed to Simon and Katharina Zobl. The house name Schmalwieser is still in use today for this farm.

frequency

The family name is one of the rarest in German-speaking countries, as all bearers of the name come from the owners of this property. There are currently around 50 families in Austria and Germany who bear this name. The rarely used field name Schmalwiese (n) has otherwise found no use as a family name.

variants

Until the 19th century, variants such as Schmallwiser, Schmalwiser, Schmalwisser, Schmahlwiser, Schmalwüsser were found in the church books, but also spelling mistakes such as Schmalzwieser or Schmalweiser came and do occur. Today none of these variants occurs (with the exception of spelling mistakes).
