The von Schmid family (also Schmid von der Kugel ) is a Zurich patrician family .

history

Burkhart Schmid from Klingnau became a citizen of Zurich in 1406. He is likely to be identical with Bürkli Schmid, who was accepted as an Ausburger in 1385 and resigned from citizenship in 1397 . Oswald Schmid was the first of the family in the Grand Council from 1441 at the latest and in the Small Council from 1444 . Since Andreas Schmid (1504–1565) was knighted on the piano procession in 1525, the dynasty bore the Junker title . Around 1530 the Schmid changed from the guild of the Meisen to the aristocratic society of the Constaffel .

Members of the family owned the Goldenberg Castle (in Dorf ZH ) from 1737 to 1765 , from 1629 to 1798 a share in the Kempten estate near Wetzikon and a country estate in Wollishofen .

The male line died out in Zurich in 1864 . Today only the branch of the family , which was accepted into the Dutch nobility in 1895, is still in flower .
