A jewelry mark is in the typography a mark , its use as opposed to a set of characters not orthographic is predefined rules, but the aesthetic considerations purely inside and outside of the body text can be applied. In contrast to iconic , symbolic or indexical characters , a decorative mark does not convey any meaning . One example is the aldus leaf .

A decorative mark can also be used in place of a punctuation mark, provided that the replaced punctuation mark remains identifiable by the reader through the shape or placement of the decorative mark. One application example is the use of a uniform decorative symbol instead of the end of sentence at the end of individual articles in a magazine issue.
