Grab the nut! is a children - Board Game by Stefan lump and Anna Oppolzer for two to four people. It is a dice and chase game in which players take on the role of young squirrels who are asked to be sent to sleep by their mother. The game was published by Schmidt Spiele in 2017 .

Theme and equipment

Grab the nut! is a dice game in which the players in the role of young squirrels run away from their mother and try not to be overtaken by her.

In addition to the game instructions, the game material consists of:

  • a game board depicting a park with trees and a path for the squirrels,
  • 16 pieces for the young squirrels, four each in the colors black, gray, white and brown,
  • a purple toy figure for the squirrel mother,
  • a color cube,
  • a "mom dice" for the squirrel mother,
  • 12 tiles with suspension bridges and
  • 121 nut chips.

Style of play

To prepare for the game, the game board is placed in the middle of the table and the suspension bridges are placed on the spaces provided on the game board. The other players each choose a color for their croissants and place three figures of the same color on the starting field (if there are two players, four each). The mother is placed on the purple space provided for the number of players. Then a starting player is chosen who receives the two dice.

Color cubes and "mom cubes"

During the course of the game, the players always roll both dice, beginning with the starting player. First he moves his pawn and then the mother according to the results. The color die shows how far the players can move with their young animals - they choose one of their figures and use it to move to the next free space in this color. If a nut is shown there, the player receives a nut chip. If the die shows a nut, the player may move to the next space with a nut printed on it and receives a nut chip. The “mom's cube” determines the mother's move. If he shows a white or a black mother, the piece is placed on the next corresponding space; if he shows no mother, the mother stops.

As soon as the mother jumps over a suspension bridge on her turn, it is removed from the game. All young animals that she has overtaken on the respective train are sent to the appropriate hiding places and each receive the number of nut chips that are printed in this cave. The number increases with the distance to the starting field and croissants that have progressed further receive more nut chips. Players whose figures are all already in hiding continue to roll the “mom dice” and introduce the mother accordingly.

The game ends when all squirrels are in their hiding spots or have reached the target field with the most valuable hiding place. The winner of the game is the player with the most nut chips.
