The Schnäggeninseli ( Swiss High German : Schneckeninsel ) is located in Lake Brienz and belongs to the Iseltwald municipality in the canton of Bern . It is privately owned and belongs to Seeburg Castle . There is a small chapel on the island and there is a barbecue area.

The island is 115 meters long and 40 meters wide. The highest point is 570 meters above sea level or 6 meters above sea level. The island is 250 meters from the shore of Iseltwald. It is protected as a natural object at the cantonal level.

Surname

The origin of the name is unclear. According to information on the website of the Iseltwald municipality, the island could have been named after the island or that the monks of the Interlaken monastery used to farm snails there. However, it is also possible to derive it from Schnaken ( Swiss German : Schnāgge ).

history

In 1825 the island came into the possession of Christian Abegglen von Iseltwald. In 1828 the Marquis von Sinety bought the island together with Seeburg Castle. From 1880 to 1896 the land belonged to Pastor John Primatt-Maud, who sold the island to the Englishman Eduard Murray Oakley of Sandgate. In 1906 Gottfried Sigrist bought the island and Seeburg Castle and left his property to the widow Savina Siegrist. In 1925 she sold the island and the castle to the savings and lending bank of the Canton of Bern. This in turn sold both to the Diakonieverband Ländli in 1926.
