Schnellenberg is the name of an old Westphalian noble family of knights who were wealthy in the Sauerland . Their ancestral home was Schnellenberg Castle near Olpe in the Sauerland.

history

Trunk line

In 1222 the Archbishop of Cologne Engelbert von Berg had the Schnellenberg Castle rebuilt to secure the state of the Duchy of Westphalia and occupied it with feudal men from the neighborhood, some of whom called themselves "von Schnellenberg" from then on.

In 1336 a knight Theodor von Schnellenberg is mentioned.

In 1337 Goswin and Hermann von Schnellenberg lived in the castle. They shared the castle with the family of the Vogt von Elspe .

In 1540 the family sold their share in Schnellenberg Castle to Jasper Schüngel von Berninghausen, who sold it on to Caspar von Fürstenberg in 1594 .

From Schnellenberg to Ahausen

In 1363 the von Schnellenberg family also acquired Ahausen Castle .

Between 1394 and 1453 Johann von Schnellenberg was mentioned in a document. His parents were Dietrich von Schnellenberg and Margarethe von Ole. He married Anna von Plettenberg , daughter of Dietrich von Plettenberg zu Merklinghausen.

Her son Johann von Schnellenberg married Elisabeth Vogt von Elspe , daughter of Wilhelm Vogt von Elspe. He died around 1517.

Their son Wilhelm von Schnellenberg was mentioned 1503–1520. He sat on Ahausen and married Elisabeth von Plettenberg zu Lenhausen.

In 1524 their son Christoph von Schnellenberg zu Ahausen was mentioned. In 1544 he married Margarethe von Heygen, daughter of Heinrich von Heygen zu Ewig.

Her daughter Elisabeth von Schnellenberg inherited Ahausen. Before 1559 she married Hermann von Neuhoff , who has called himself from "Neuhoff zu Ahausen" since then.

From Schnellenberg to Schönholthausen

In 1590 the von Schnellenberg family also owned an estate in Schönholthausen near Eslohe .

The last known representative of the family, Carl Friedrich Adolph von Schnellenberg zu Schönholthausen, was a captain in the Dutch service in 1747.

The coat of arms shows five red diagonal bars in gold. On the helmet with a red and gold bulge two golden fronds with golden handles, each frond with three red stripes in descending order. The ceilings are red and gold.
