High-speed rail lines in Turkey

Traffic geographic conditions

The high-speed line is intended to improve the connection between the Istanbul metropolitan region and the Turkish- Bulgarian border and thus improve rail traffic between the EU and Turkey. It complements the existing İstanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad line from the 1870s, which no longer does justice to today's traffic volume. Connections to this route should be in Halkalı , Cerkezkoy , Edirne and Kapikule . It also extends the high-speed line coming from Anatolia, coming through the Marmaray Tunnel and ending in Halkalı, to the west.

project

The new line begins at Halkalı station, which is located at kilometer 28 of the existing line. Their kilometers count from Istanbul Sirkeci station . The new line will have a length of 233 kilometers. A double-track high-speed line designed for a maximum speed of 200 km / h is to be built. After commissioning, the travel time Edirne –Istanbul will be reduced from three and a half hours today to one and a half hours.

The project is divided into the three sections Halkalı – Ispartakule, Ispartakule – Çerkezköy and Çerkezköy – Kapıkule.
