Hailstorm
Hagelslag (lit. "Hagelschlag") is a Dutch sandwich made from chocolate or colored sugar . Sprinkles can directly from the packaging on one with butter smeared bread or other pastries are scattered. The chocolate grains are mostly called Schokostreusel in German .
According to Dutch law, only Hagelslag with at least 32% cocoa may be called chocoladehagelslag ; to a lesser extent it is called cacaofantasie . Due to the lower cocoa and higher sugar content, the grains melt worse.
Flavors
Hagelslag is available in different flavors. The most well-known are:
- Milk chocolate
- Dark chocolate
- Mixture of milk chocolate and white chocolate
- Fruits ( vruchtenhagel )
- Anise ( anijshagel )
The chocolate variants are also available in the form of flakes instead of grains and are called chocoladevlokken .
Manufacturer
The Dutch company Venz started manufacturing Hagelslag in 1936, for which special machines had to be developed.
Notoriety
Hagelslag is one of the most famous Dutch bread toppings . Outside of the Netherlands , Belgium and the former Dutch colonies of Indonesia and Suriname, it is mostly only offered as a decoration for decorating cakes or desserts.
Due to its proximity to the Netherlands, Hagelslag is known as a bread topping, especially in north-west Germany.
