Scholastique Mukasonga (* 1956 in Rwanda, Southern Province ) is a Rwandan writer .

Life

Mukasonga was born in the then Gikongoro Province in 1956 into a Tutsi family. She experienced the violence and humiliation of the ethnic conflict in Rwanda as a child. In 1973 she was driven into exile in Burundi . Much of her family was killed in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda . Today she lives with her family in Normandy .

Her book The Blessed Virgin of the Nile was filmed in 2019 as Notre-Dame du Nil .
