In a ballast works , also called gravel works , coarse rock is processed into stone ballast of various sizes or grains , or directly excavated ballast (gravel) is processed for further use.

Typically, larger gravel works open up several gravel pits or quarries in order to process the quarry in a central location.

Heavy machines such as B. Jaw crushers and vibrating screens . Gravel works are often located near quarries in order to simplify the transport of the raw material as much as possible.
